What is ethics and how does it apply to designers, their practice and me? It is all about responsibility and who has the responsibility, is it me as a designer? The client, or the consumer who is ultimately responsible for the materials used within production. I have noticed that many companies recently have been advertising their ethical stance, that they are green, I believe this is because of the pressure from 'ethical' middle-class consumers who eat organic food, and avoid cheap goods due to the fact sweatshop labour is involved. The thing is unethical products will still be around unless the price of more ethical and sustainable products lessens, thus allowing people on lower incomes to make the choice, the choice which at the moment they are unable to make. I see parallels between milgram's experiment and ethical/sustainable purchasing, milgram shows that in the face of authority people will go against their own views and moral stance if somebody in authority tells them to do so. Its the same with consumerism people will go for affordable products and go against their beliefs.
